Theories of the Home Run

© Bryan Walker

ESPN's Harold Reynolds mentioned his theory on the abnormal amount of home runs being hit this year. MLB has placed a new logo on the official baseballs that allows major league players to pick up the spin on the ball better, so says Reynolds. This theory is just one of many to explain the number of home runs flying out of MLB parks around the country.

So what makes this season even more homer-happy than the previous three seasons? The last half of the 1990's saw Roger Maris' record broken, 2 players hit more than 60 homers in a season, and several other home run records broken.

I mentioned last week that Sparky Anderson believes that the ball is harder than ever. SportCenter showed pictures of several power hitters 8 to 10 years ago (Jeff Bagwell, Albert Belle, and Mark McGwire, for example) and then showed pictures of them today. They are much larger today. Much larger and more muscular.

So this article is dedicated to pointing out some articles on the net that discuss the home run. In the past couple of years, I've read a lot of information explaining why so many home runs are being hit. The most convincing ones are the ones that utilize statistical data to support their opinions. Personally, I agree with Sparky Anderson that the baseball is harder. There are probably multiple factors that you can read about below, but the harder ball is difficult to deny. Pitchers say it, former players say it, staticians say it. Hitters are the only people who refuse to admit it.

But here are the articles:

ESPN's Jayson Stark http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stark/502...

USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/sports/focuswed....

Take a look at those.

NOTE: Its great to see The Big Cat, Andres Galarraga, come back from cancer.
