Closely related, and something that looks fun, is flyball. Mixed breed dogs are eligible to compete, and can make up part of a team along with purebred dogs. The object seems to be for the dogs to clear a set number of hurdles, and then release a ball, retrieve it and return to start. This sets up a relay and the idea is to complete this in the least amount of time. This explanation is a very watered down version of the true sport, since I have just started researching this. For those of you who know more, or actually compete, please feel free to share information in the discussion area. This looks like a great sport and it would be a pleasure hearing some discussion concerning this and any other sport you enjoy with your dog.

Another fun sport, and one that you don't necessarily need to worry about competition, unless it's your kids, is flying disc, or Frisbee. Yes, there are ways to earn a title with your dog just for having fun with those age old stand bys. Since this is a topic I will address further, the only links I have found are those associated with individual clubs. There is not a lack of information available through these clubs. If you know of any large, governing body, please feel free to post this information in the discussion area. If not, stay in touch for more information on this high energy, enjoyable sport. If none of these sound like you would enjoy them, there are many other types of competition, or service areas, available to choose from to have fun with your dog. For those of you who would really like to specialize, there is carting, pulling, water rescue, tracking. In the area of service, there are therapy dogs, search and rescue, and many types of companion dogs that require specialized training.

The ultimate goal from all of this information is to help you have a well trained, happy dog. Like most of us, dogs do not want to spend all day doing absolutely nothing. Think about what a boring existence that would be for you-it's the same for your dog. I know Bandit loves to "work", as we call it, and seeks out every chance to do so. If your dog is bored, this also can lead to behavior problems. Part of responsible dog ownership is being certain your dog will follow at least basic commands. To accomplish this, you don't need any type of title or competition. My advice for here is that one of the best ways to train your dog for basic commands is to take at least one obedience course offered by a reputable trainer. This gives you a good, objective way to train your dog, introduce you and your dog to some social areas and let's you get out and have some fun. Please keep in mind that a well trained dog is a happier dog.
