The answer to this is YES. What area are you looking to compete in? This article is intended to give you an idea of what types of competition are out there, and how to start training for competition. As I looked for information on this topic, I was overwhelmed with the number and types of competition available. Some of my next articles will address specifics concerning different areas of competition and where to find more information on that specific training.
Where do you begin if you want to compete with your dog? In my opinion, you begin with basic obedience training. This is the building block of any type of training and competition. This will also enhance the relationship and trust between you and your dog. If you and your dog can not work together on the basics, you will not be able to take that next step and compete successfully. Even though it is not a competition, a good way to start would be to earn the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title. This title is a tremendous building block for many things, and is a great way to start having a wonderful relationship with your dog. I also asked if anyone would like to start training toward their CGC in the discussion area. This started a small discussion, but it would be great to hear from others who are headed in this direction.
Until recently, I did not know that a mixed breed dog could compete and earn an obedience title. By being a member of an online group, I was introduced to the concept of rally obedience. According to the AKC website, "Rally provides a link from the Canine Good CitizenĀ® (CGC) program to obedience or agility competition, both for dogs and handlers. In addition, rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of competition." What more could you ask for in any type of training?! Another type of competition that is fun and open to all breeds is agility. If you have a high energy dog that is willing to "overcome" some obstacles, then this sport is for you. Agility is the sport of going over, around, and through various obstacles on a course that is set up. There must be good communication between dog and handler, since the obstacles must be run in order, and in the fastest time possible. I have always been amazed watching the teams work together in this sport. If I ever get myself together enough, this is definitely something Bandit and I would like to try.
