It’s Time!...Looking for Your Mixed Breed Dog


Rescue groups are another option. Usually the dog is in foster care and the family who is caring for the dog has an excellent idea of who this dog really is and has taken the time to reinforce at least basic obedience. Rescue groups usually require you to complete some type of application and will screen the applicants for a dog. This is done to insure that everyone is being given a fair chance and that appropriate matches are made. Because the rescue group wants things to be the best for all involved, there may be other requirements as well. Be prepared for a home visit, bringing your other pets to visit, and maybe even a follow up home visit once your new dog has been living with you for a while. If you choose this route, that is just great for you, and the dog. Not only have you given a dog a new home, but you have the right attitude about the whole arrangement. Everything that is done is being done for everyone's well being.

Generally, there are not many breeders for mixed breed dogs, but they do exist. The same rules for choosing a purebred dog should be followed for the mixed breed dog. One should do their research to be certain the breeder is reputable. Visit the facility and talk to the breeder. Take time with the litter and ask questions. Most breeders will have a veterinarian examine the dogs and probably have their first immunizations before you can take the dog home.

One other avenue I mentioned at the beginning is luring the stray off the street. This may not work for everyone, and I don't generally recommend this route. However, I have a personal example that does support this manner. When I was in college, I was walking home during a snowstorm that truly paralyzed the city. Not even public transportation was moving and fortunately I was in a position to walk home. As I traveled on my way, I had an encounter with a huge, black German Shepherd dog. Not only did he approach me in a very friendly way, he knew that I was a big softie and followed me home. I ended up being one of the lucky ones and had, what I feel to this day, one of the best companions ever for many years.
