Some people feel less intimidated choosing a mixed breed as their first dog. It seems that if you have a mixed breed, there may be this idea that it does not need to be as well groomed, trained, etc. as a purebred and therefore some pressure is taken off the first time owner. Remember, being a responsible pet owner means being certain your dog is well trained. The dog should know the basic commands and listen to them, not necessarily be ready for the obedience competition ring. Further explanation of this idea can be found at Dog Owner's Guide: The Mixed Breed Dog (http://www.Canismajor.com/dog/mixed.html)
Another reason is that you just don't feel you need a purebred dog. You may not want to spend the money associated with purchasing a purebred dog. Others feel that in owning a purebred dog, there are many obligations that go along with it and want that type of situation. If you spend a large sum of money on a purebred, you may be more inclined to be worried about grooming, training and other maintenance issues. Mixed breed dogs don't usually cost that much money, so the investment pressure isn't there. You can work on training your mixed breed to the same extent as a purebred, and probably with the same results. My honest opinion is that every dog has these needs to be trained and cared for and a mixed breed is just as important as a purebred. Whatever your reason for deciding to add a dog to your family, take the time to look at the dogs available, do some reading on the different breeds and talk with the staff where you decide to get your pet. This research is time that is well spent and is worth the investment you put into it. It will help you make a good decision on the type of dog you want and help avoid the heartache of choosing the wrong dog and all that goes with it.
