TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MISSISSIPPI© Dorothy Hill
Aug 12, 2001
It's August and it's time to go back to my day job--teaching. I'm going to be teaching a class called Mississippi Studies this year, and that got me to thinking about what people know about the state. I decided to shock my students the first day and give them a quiz to test their knowledge about their state. Of course, I'm not so mean as to put the grades down. I'll save that for later. But what do you, my readers, know about the state?
We are going to have a contest this week. I am going to ask some basic and not so basic questions. I'll even provide a few web sites that could be of help. E-mail me your answers by Saturday night. All who answer the questions correctly will have their names placed in a drawing to determine the winner. The winner will be announced next Monday. If no one answers all the questions correctly, then we will go with who correctly answers the most. 1. Who is the governor of the state?
2. Who is the lieutenant governor?
3. Mississippi is known as the Magnolia State because of its state flower and state tree. But the state has some other symbols also. Can you identify them?
a. state bird:
b. state fish:
c. state land mammal:
d. state water mammal:
e. state insect:
f. state beverage:
g. state fossil:
h. state stone:
i. state song:
j. state waterfowl:
4. When was Mississippi admitted to the Union?
5. What is the highest point in the state?
6. What is the lowest point?
7. Eight flags have flown over the state. List them.
8. How many counties are there in Mississippi?
9. Who are the two U.S. Senators from Mississippi?
10. Which Pulitzer Prize-winning Mississippi author died recently? (Hint: I wrote an article about the author.)
Remember, students--excuse me--readers, to number your answers in your e-mail (missisip2001@yahoo.com). Here are some web sites that might be of help.
