A MAY MORNING IN MISSISSIPPI

It's a May morning in Mississippi as I sit at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee trying to wake up enough to halfway function. Outside my window the noise is almost deafening for the birds are already busy doing whatever birds do this early. The woods around my house are filled with the sounds of chickadees, robins, sparrows, mockingbirds, and cardinals. In the distance a rooster joins in the chorus. Down at the lake behind the house the ducks are swimming around trying to catch their breakfast. I can almost imagine hearing I CAUGHT ONE in the quacking.

Competing with the smell of my coffee is the smell of fresh cut grass with just a hint of wild onion. Also, there is the sweet offering of the honeysuckle vines.

Through the open kitchen door I can see our cat Smokey running along the porch rail waiting for someone to come out and rub her back. Hilda, our boxer, watches the cat from her doghouse just waiting for the moment Smokey comes down so that she can get her morning exercise with a good chase. I can almost see visions of feline chops in her eyes.

Through the woods, I can hear the neighbor's children laughing and yelling as they wait to be picked up by the school bus. Maybe they will work off some of their excess energy before they get to school.

I can see someone taking the path into the woods. A long stick is in her hand to steady her walk when necessary, deal with a snake if she must, and to gently move a limb, a vine, or a stand of grass to discover whatever nature may be hiding.

Along with all the beauty that I see, smell, and hear, I must admit that I am swatting flies that keep sneaking in through the holes in the window screens, and I am scratching mosquito bites that I received walking from my car into the house last night. It is definitely a May morning in Mississippi.
