Everyone remembers that in South Africa in 1967, Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first human heart transplant. What most people don't know or remember is that the stage was first set for this at the University of Mississippi Medical Center when Dr. James D. Hardy performed the first human lung transplant in 1963. The next year he and his team transplanted the heart of a chimpanzee into a dying man. It beat 90 minutes before it stopped.
