War movies are not my raison d'tre for living. I would rather watch a cheesy sci-fci (pronounced skiffy, like the peanut butter) before watching a war movie. Having said that, let me also say that I enthusiastically get involved in all my projects.
If I do have a passion it's toy soldiers. Britains, Barclay, Manoilnoil, I collect them all. It's a passion I have to indulge in silence as my wife does not understand the love I have for these tiny pewter and lead figurines.
While I don't watch war movies, I read a tremendous amount of military related material. I am a veracious reader. Put me in a bathroom and I will read the toilet paper. This has been true ever since I was a child. Growing up we lived in Tucson, AZ, I learned to speak Spanish. My father had learned Spanish as a child. His mother spoke Spanish. All my babysitters were the neighborhood girls and they spoke Spanish.
So, when I arrived in California I could not speak English. Once I got the hang of the language skills I read. Everything. Unfortunately for my children, I have foisted that same love of reading on them. I say unfortunately because I read to my daughter before she was two The Iliad and The Odyssey.
Military material is no different. I am constantly reading material on military affairs. The basic reason I was not picked by Burnett and company for COMBAT MISSIONS was that I was not one of those special boys and girls. However, I have a greater and more well rounded background and experience than any of those special people. While I was not a SEAL, I can tell you what training the SEALS do and when. While I was not Special Forces qualified, I did work with them and I know their history and how they are trained. And, unlike, a lot of the would - be "military advisors" I can express my knowledge in a way that is understandable by the majority of the movie going public.
