THE SALZDORF WELLSPRING
The name Wade Stevenson is one to which you should be looking forward. The Salzdorf Wellspring is a good first entry into the world of Cold War spy novels. Not so much of the Ian Fleming mode, but more of the Mike Hammer mode, Stevenson give us a rollicking tale of greed, avarice, and hatred intertwined with Nazi stolen Jewish owned jewels and paintings. Based on his own personal experience, he tells a good tale. Picking a timely subject, the existance of Nazi stolen Jewish possessions, he gives us a good perspective of post - war Europe and the detrimental effect that the Nazis had on the wealth of Europe. Still not totally accounted for are the millions of dollars worth of jewels, paintings, and other possessions the Nazis stole from Jewish families and put into their own coffers. Stevenson's book widens this issue by describing how investigators from the U. S. Air Force, C. I. A., and foreign governments become involved in this sordid tale. He also brings in a little known; but vitally important group, the U. S. Air Force Postal Group as part of the team looking for a sadistic, renegade Air Force officer. This is a book where the adage, "Write about what you know, "is absolutely true. Stevenson spins this tale around those things he knows well. Not only being good fiction, he adds enough military, political, and societal realism to coalesce the story into a solid whole. Stevenson's background in the U. S. Government's Department of Defense has allowed him to draw upon personal experiences. Like those of spy master writer Ian Fleming, he has been able to intertwine his experiences into a great novel. This book is a good first effort. Stevenson shows just how a determined amateur can mature into a good writer. He has picked a timely story and ran with the idea. Getting a publisher to publish is often the hardest part of a new writer, but Rodgers & Nelson have given Stevenson that opportunity. Let us readers hope that they keep him around. Go To Page: 1
