How I insulted the Church of Yodi the Pointed Eared or never, never, never write anything bad about George Lucas.
One reader wrote: I am left with the feeling that you have some good points but you are missing THE point. The big bad enemy, regardless of whether it is the Trade Federation Battle Droid army or the Empire's army of Stormtroopers, are depicted as mindless, merciless and without conscience, this is why they are evil ... Let me understand this, they are evil because they lack intelligence? No, I got the point. By definition any simplistic enemy is portrayed as mindless, merciless, and without a conscience. That makes the story writing easier. Complex badguys require deeper stories. By the way, my article dealt with the lack of a consciousness by both the Stormtroopers and the Droids. That is, the ability to think. I did not make any statements about having a conscience. That is, the ability to tell right from wrong. I was comparing the simplisity of how Lucas' described the military in his screenplays. Another reader wrote: ... the Control Ship or the Commander Droid(s) are plot devices, while insulting folks such as yourself who pick things apart for the details ... Insulted? No, I was not insulted. George Lucas was not commenting about my family or myself. He wrote and produced a story. A story that I have every right to comment about. If I see something I think is stupid I am going to say something. And, seeing those Droids pop out of their deployment vehicles and attack in echelon so that they were mowed down as so much wheat is bone, dirt stupid. This philosophy reflects not well on both the characters and the producer. While I have not produced any movies on my own and certainly will never produce any of the blockbusters for which Lucas' is so famous, I can and do comment on his movies. I do not try to find fault everywhere I turn in a movie. Hey, I let the empty ammunition pouches in THE THIN RED LINE go by without mentioning them. But, when a producer is so blatant in portraying any military as so fundamentally stupid as they cannot attack little ape - like creatures without losing or attack amphibious creatures in a phalanx I get a little peeved.
