William S. Hart would have called the first of the Hollywood advisors. Coming to Hollywood in 1914, he provided first hand information to the production companies such as Lasky Famous Players (later Paramount) on authentic era clothing and firearms. He is known to have provided several movies he worked on with his own firearms. Also, he provided or knew how to provide the leather each actor wore. What is leather, you ask? Simply, it is the holster for the firearm. Yes, holsters varied from man to man. There were several significant holster leather designs from which cowboys could chose.
Wyatt Earp was also known to have worked in Hollywood during the "reign" of William S. Hart, but not nearly to the extent of Hart. Nor, did Earp bring the depth of experience that Hart did to the movie industry.
Since there has been a Hollywood, there have been advisors. Within the body of experience that are the people of the motion picture/TV industries, there has never been enough people for all the things necessary to know for any individual production. There has always been the need for finding the right information. And, that requires knowing who to ask.
William S. Hart provided advice to a young Hollywood on the popular genre of the day; Westerns. Likewise, Capt. Dale Dye, USMC, Ret., provides advice to Hollywood on toady's popular genre; war movies. As long as there are storywriters, there will be a need for people to provide accurate, good, and concise information.
Please note that the drawing of Hart was done by Flagg. Flagg is the same artist who created the infamous Uncle Sam poster of WWI.
