What a crock!

© Debra Diana Blue

I thought that would be a great name for this week's entry, but as soon as I started surfing for links, I found one called What A Crock. Isn't that a fine kettle of fish?

I wanted to gather up some good crockpot recipes because this is my favorite time of the year to break out my crockpot and go to town!! Beans, stews, chili, soups — that's only the beginning. If you've ever used one, you know what I mean. It's convenient and safe, and talk about coming home to the savory aroma of something delicious. I have never gone wrong with mine . . . well, I may have had an experiment or two go wrong but that's my fault.

The crockpot is also versatile. You can bake, broil, roast and fry in it. You can make sauces, gravies and dips. You can prepare meats, poultry, vegetarian dishes, fish, vegetables and fruits. Wouldn't you have a smile on your face if you knew you were coming home to BBQ spare ribs? Of course you would! None of this luxury comes without a little prep work though. Here are a few tips for crockpot cooking:

  • Thinly slice your vegetables and place on the bottom or near the sides of the crockpot.
  • Trim fats and wipe meats well. Season with salt and pepper. Place meat on top of vegetables.
  • For roasts and stews, pour liquid over meat. In slow cooking, more juices are retained than in conventional cooking, so use less liquid than your recipe calls for.
  • Always cook with your cover on.
  • Don't leave unattended around children, they are very curious little buzzards.
  • Invite author of article over for dinner.

  • Oops, how'd that get in there?

    I know you'll find some wonderful dishes at these links . . . I did. :)

Another link called Crockpot Recipes has a searchable index. You know those are my favorite kind of links — type in any food and voila!! But the unique thing about this database is that you can tailor your search. You can select how many recipes you want returned and if you want exact matches, or recipes containing the keyword.

I included this link because I have eaten here and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Sutton Place Gourmet (which is a wonderful place) has a newsletter. I found it while looking for fall recipes. Sutton Place Gourmet Newsletter
