Choreography Videos

There aren't many videos out there with good choreography for beginners. The only one I've seen that I like well enough to recommend is The Dancer's Toolkit, Volume 1, by Bàraka.

This video is an excellent "next step" after you have completed one or two of the fundamentals videos recommended above. It provides an excellent warm-up, describes each move very clearly, then shows how to assemble those moves into a finished dance. Bàraka presents the choreography in two versions, a simple version which would be the right level to try after working with an introductory video, and a more complex version that you can try after you have been dancing a while.

This video comes with a companion book that provides a written description of each step along with choreography notes.

Performance Videos

All too many of the videos portraying belly dance performances are poorly lit with terrible sound quality. So far, I have found only a couple that have good lighting, good sound, and good dancing. Here they are:

Farrashah, The Video

The video contains 100 minutes of diverse solo performances, all by Farrashah. Although all feature the same dancer, she uses a large variety of music, wigs, costumes, scenery, props, and dance styles to portray the many forms that belly dancing can take.

Farrashah is not only a versatile dancer, but she's also a professional videographer, and her high standards are apparent on this video. By 1980's standards (which is when it was produced), the production quality is excellent. The lighting is varied, but you can always see well. Varied camera angles hold your interest, but don't interfere with watching the flow of the dance.
