The number of resources on the web for plus-sized belly dancers is constantly growing. Here's a tour of the ones I've found:

Right Here On Suite101

I've posted a series of articles here on Suite101 with advice, costume ideas, and encouragement for full-figured women who are interested in belly dancing.

These include:

  • Fabulous Full Figures, Part 1: Leyla Lanty. This was the first article in this series, and features a photo gallery showcasing Leyla Lanty from the San Francisco area and her costume collection, including many from Cairo.
  • Fabulous Full Figures, Part 2: Leyla Lanty. This was the second article in this series, and features another photo gallery showcasing Leyla Lanty. Includes pictures of additional costumes made in Cairo.
  • Fabulous Full Figures, Part 3: Asifa el-Bah'r. This is the third article in this series, and features a photo gallery showcasing Asifa el-Bah'r from the San Francisco area. In her costuming style, she assembles various components from diverse sources to create ensembles that look great together.
  • Fabulous Full Figures, Part 4: M'shisha al Fo'awi. This is the fourth article in this series, and features a photo gallery showcasing M'shisha al Fo'awi from the San Francisco area. M'shisha al Fo'awi makes many of her own costumes, and her styles may give you some ideas for inexpensive but attractive outfits you can make for yourself.
  • Fabulous Full Figures, Part 5: Asifa el-Bah'r. A second photo gallery of Asifa el-Bah'r, featuring four additional costumes from her collection.
  • Belly Dance and Weight Loss. Suppose your doctor verifies that you really should trim some weight. Here's how to use belly dancing as part of a weight loss program featuring healthy diet and exercise. I know it can work -- I lost 55 pounds this way and have kept it off!

Elsewhere on the Web

Other web sites have additional resources for plus-sized belly dancers that are well worth a look. Here's a tour of the ones I've found so far...

  • Nancy McCaskey's Plus-Size Dancer's Resources web site is a collection of links to vendors who sell costume items and exercise garb for plus-sized dancer. A great place to go shopping for your dance needs!
  • Belly Dancing is for Anybody with Any Body shows a nasty little e-mail that Shaheena received attacking her for featuring photos of a plus-sized woman (Shaheena herself) modeling the merchandise she was selling on her web site. This web page shows how Shaheena fought back.
  • Belly Dancing for Full Figured Women. This entire web site focuses on the needs and interests of plus-sized women who are interested in belly dancing. With assorted advice, opinion pieces, a discussion forum, a photo galleries of role models, this site is designed to be a web portal for the dance community.
