Getting Educated on Mid-East Politics

© lawhawk

If you're thinking about pursuing an education in Mid-East Politics and/or Middle East Studies in general, there are some great universities that will definetely serve your needs. Some of the universities are quite well known, such as New York University or Harvard University but others have as good, or better reputation for providing a comprehensive program.

There are numerous other colleges and universities that have Middle East programs worth checking out.

Moshe Dayan Center for Middle East Affairs is an Israeli program geared to improving understanding of the Middle East and foreign policy.

The University of London Center for Islamic and Middle East Law is a great resource for learning about Islamic law - one of the backbones to understanding how the bulk of the Middle East views the rule of law. Given that Islam provides the basic legal code for many countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia and has tremendous sway over Sudan and the Arab Emirates among others, learning how these countries view the legal system is crucial.

The University of Pennsylvania has a great Middle Eastern program - on the same level as the other Ivy League programs.

The University of Texas has one of the best Middle Eastern programs and websites online. I have honored them as having one of the top Middle East Politics sites because their site is so thorough as to the politics, culture, history and economic forces that guide the countries of the Middle East.

News and Notes

  • CNN reports that the latest attack, where a Palestinian youth was killed at the hands of an Israeli, further deepens the crisis in the peace process.

  • Afghanistan and Iran are currently engaging in saber rattling following reports that the ruling Afghan Taliban forces murdered Shi'ite Muslims near the Iranian border. Iran has responded by conducting war games along that border and Pakistan has offered to mediate between the two at the UN in New York. The biggest problem is that the Taliban aren't seen as the legitimate ruling government of Afghanistan and therefore it is difficult to conduct negotiations at a national level. This is why Pakistan is involved - they are one of three countries who have officially recognized the Taliban claim.
