By now, you're probably aware that there are hundreds, if not thousands of news outlets online and plenty of content providers that provide feeds from many of the major news services. With the approach of the fall and school starting up again, I am going to provide you with what I think is a pretty comprehensive listing of news outlets that cover the Middle East and provide the local color to understand why certain political decisions are made.
CNN is definitely a staple of mine. They have one of the largest news corps in the region and together with their television presence, they give you great general coverage of the region.
News Outlets is a fairly comprehensive list of news organizations around the world. Although the Middle East gets fairly short shrift in this listing, the list is informative for several reasons - most importantly that being the ability to see the spin that different countries put on the same news. This fact would allow both the casual reader and serious researcher to get a far better understanding of the issues and facts than otherwise possible.
Israel
For a more focused view of Israeli politics and the cultural scene, you can check out the
Jerusalem Post.
Television in Israel may be limited, but here's a complete list of Israeli TV stations.
Iran
Islamic Republic News Agency is the Iranian main news organization and provides official news from the country. Iranian news is generally sanitized by Islamic censors and has had a decidedly anti-Western spin. In recent months, this has moderated to some degree as relations between the US and Iran have improved somewhat in the last year.
In other News:
The bombings in Kenya and Tanzania have prompted tremendous speculation in the US as to how two bombings of American Embassies could be planned and carried out within the span of several minutes of each other. This would definitely seem at first blush to be the work of an organized group and some feel that this may be tied to a Saudi dissident who now lives in Afghanistan. However, Tanzanian officials are detaining a several groups of individuals, including several Sudanese and Iraqis, for questioning.
Fear of further attacks on US Embassies has prompted the US and other countries to increase security around their facilities overseas. More news on this will surely follow.
