Okay, maybe it isn't fair to lump together the official swearing in of Knesset Member Ariel Sharon as the next Prime Minister with the elimination of the dual voting methodology that allowed voters to vote for the Prime Minister independent of party affiliations. Then again, maybe they are more similar than you might first imagine.

Both were the result of experiments and a certain tiredness among the Israeli electorate. The dual voting structure was supposed to free the Prime Minister from being constrained by the factional nature of the Knesset. However, it appears that the shortlived experiment in dual voting resulted in giving greater power to the smaller parties in the Knesset. Those small parties could then throw their weight around and debase Labor or Likud from making any meaningful policy changes.

Ariel Sharon is taking power at a time when Israel is wondering what kind of 'partner' it has in Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasir Arafat. He may have been elected as a 'punishment' to the Palestinians to let them know just how annoyed the Israeli public is because they could not accept the most generous offer any nation has ever offered under any circumstances. Despite what the Palestinian leaders may say about the offer, many Palestinians on the street are wondering just what their leaders were smoking. This isn't the first time their leaders have given a song and dance about how they would accomplish everything and the kitchen sink, but deliver absolutely nothing. It was the same way in 1947-48.

The conflict between Israelis and Arabs has gone to the Internet - a possible sign that some are tiring of the incessant violence or perhaps an extension of the violence and sign of more mayhem to come. Hamas has blamed Israeli intelligence agencies for the attack on its website that redirected traffic to a porno site. This attack was just the most recent in a string of attacks against both Israeli and Arab website that has included the official government websites for the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
