Recommended Reading List for Peace Process in the Middle East

I've taken to writing articles every two weeks as some of you may have noticed. Many in the US are preoccupied with wondering who may be the next President of the US after Election Day failed to provide us with a clear winner. Vice President Gore was leading in the popular vote nationwide as well as in the all-important Electoral College but Texas Governor George W. Bush would be able to claim victory by winning Florida by a slim margin and take the Electoral College by obtaining the 25 Electoral College votes.

All of this will have some effect on the proceedings in the Middle East but the outcome is still probably more than a week away which leads me to the basis of this short article.

I've finally decided to put together a reading list of materials that anyone looking to study the region ought to have. The books on the list have been chosen because they are the best works in the area, provide insight into the conflict, or propose theories that can explain various aspects of the conflict between Israel and her neighbors.

Longtime readers of this column will notice that some of the books listed have been reviewed by myself in the past. Tom Friedman, David Shipler, and William Quandt are three authors whom I regard quite highly and their works are instructive. Many college courses on the Middle East include these books yet they remain quite readable and accessable as their authors are award winning contributors to the New York Times and other publications.

I hope that you take the time to look through the recommended reading list and if you have suggestions to add books or other materials, be sure to email me.

Thanks!
