After intensive meetings between the leaders of Israel and the U.S. as well as conference calls between the security forces in Israel and U.S. FBI, CIA and Departmentof Defense officials, it has been determined that the two bombs set off were designed and built by the same person. The bomb squads of both countries were able to piece together the detonators and casings to find numerous similarities in design and materials used to piece together the timing devices. They also determined that the terrorist group claiming responsibility was sponsored by Iraq which has been resisting inspection by the U.N. arms inspection teams. The latest figures on the injured in Houston is that 1247 were killed and 9240 were injured, most with respiratory distress. The latest tally from the gas attack in Israel is that 139 were killed and 1490 were injured, many seriously and hospital officials have indicated that many of those will not survive the week. Outrage in the U.S. and Israel as well as the rest of the world is mounting against Iraq as the U.N. met in emergency sessions through the night and the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to continue sanctions and impose additional restrictions on Iraq's trade with the outside world. Letters of condolences have flowed into both Israel and the U.S. from all over the world and national leaders of many countries have sent their representatives to Washington and Jerusalem to meet personally with the president and prime minister respectively. Military analysts have noted that the Israeli Defense Forces are on a heightened state of alert, one which has not been seen since 1973 when it was widely regarded that the Israelis had alerted their nuclear forces to arm those weapons for a retaliatory strike should the IDF conventional forces be unable to stem the tide of Syrian and Egyptian forces into Israel's interior. A similar alert level in the U.S. has put several air force bases on maximum alert and has caused rerouting of flights in and around those bases in preparation to launch an attack. From the number of U.S. bases and flights of B-2 stealth bombers and F-117 stealth fighters, it is reported that the president has scrambled over 70 stealth aircraft to the region and all are capable of launching nuclear weapons.
