The Grand Game

Europe, and particularly the French, Germans, and Russians are busy playing the grand game. They think that the world needs a balance of powers approach not much different than what existed after Napoleon torched the continent and Metternich, Castlereagh, et al., settled on the Treaty of Vienna.

The problem is that the Europeans are playing the wrong game. They think that balancing the US interests against their own, teamed up with the Arabs would lead to stability and prosperity.

They don't realize that we're in the fight for the species (to quote from Starship Troopers). The Arabs, particularly the Islamic fundamentalists see the balance of powers game as fundamentally assisting their own takeover of Europe and becoming a grand power, while their own society hasn't advanced much beyond the 8th Century in terms of morals, ethics, or societial norms. They'll play along with the Europeans who are undermining their own survival because they're siding with the wrong group. These are national leaders who think that the US is the bull in the china shop that must be stopped and think that terrorism is a nuisance that can be controlled. They think that looking the other way as Arab nations develop nuclear weapons is better than actively and aggressively confronting those nations so that they do not develop weapons that they have no hesitation in using against other nations.

This isn't just about Israel. It's about Europe outliving its usefulness for the Islamists. Once they do, the Islamists will torch 'em at their earliest convenience. Why is this the case? Because they see them as weak and are still the infidel.

The US is the bigger threat, one that poses a far greater challenge since most Americans recognize the challenge. This isn't just about the US military capabilities, although those are unparalleled. It is about the will to use that power. The current administration has shown its willingness to use that power and strike at the heart of the Islamists 'homeland.' That upsets the apple cart since the Islamists had been lulled into thinking that the US would withdraw on taking casualties. Iraq and Afghanistan have shown them to be wrong.

In sum, I am coming to believe that the European view on Israel isn't about Israel per se but about using it as a wedge issue against the US to expand its own power and influence with the Arabs. They're continuing to play the balance of powers, even as their own position undermines their democracy, freedom, and long term prospects for peace in the Middle East.
