Iran: A Fly in the Ointment? How could we trust a country that supports terrorism to tell us the truth about their nuclear programs? There must be more oversight into their efforts to enrich uranium as well as what they are doing with the enriched uranium as well as the spent fuel from the reactor. There needs to be surprise inspections of their facilities as well as a declaration, by Iran, of all the facilities related to their nuclear efforts. Along with this, there should be the absolute certainty that the Iranians are not producing nuclear weapons from any of the materials involved in their power generation process. This needs to be monitored very closely due to the fact that Iran is difficult to trust. It is also difficult to believe that Iran is not interfering in the process of installing a new government in Iraq. Various Iraqi Shiite clerics are involved with Iran or sought refuge in Iran during Saddam Hussein's rule. Some clerics are visiting Iran at this time, perhaps to seek guidance or perhaps create a plan to interrupt the formation of a democratic government in Iraq instead attempting to install an Islamic state much like what exists in Iran. This is a plan that Iran had wished to carry out two decades ago when it was drawn into war with Iraq. They wanted to replace Saddam Hussein's government with a government similar to that of Iran. The possibility of forming or attempting to form an Islamic state in Iraq is very likely and should be met with resistance not only from the United States but from the people of Iraq as well. Is there a link between Iran and Al-Qaeda? The hawks in the government would like to think that there is but this author finds that it would be very difficult for the Iranians to get along with Al-Qaeda because of the religious differences between the two. The Iranians are comprised almost exclusively of Shiite Muslims whereas the Al-Qaeda network, including Osama Bin Laden, is almost exclusively Sunni Muslim. There is quite a clash over the beliefs of both sects of Islam so it would likely make it difficult for the two to get along. Then again, who knows, both Iran and Al-Qaeda could be working together to help undermine western influences in that part of the world. The overall picture on Iran makes it appear as if they are guilty of many things including hiding
