Daylily Rust- Where Will It End

daylily problems you may encounter.

As a gardener it is important to note that not all Hemerocallis cultivars exhibit the same degree of susceptibility to the rust disease. Since the number of named cultivars in existence is in the 10s of thousands and the disease has only been known in the US for 18 months, there has hardly been time to do exhaustive investigation of resistance of strains. However, some researchers are already beginning to investigate relative resistance of cultivars to infection. We will see a great deal more of this work in the upcoming years. Check the links below for susceptibility lists. I expect that as you peruse such lists based on limited early observations, you will see some variations in listings of individual cultivars across categories, but over time as more observations come in and standardization of observation criteria develops, these conflicting reports should resolve themselves.

According to the national Plant Board:

"Susceptible Varieites: Although not all daylily cultivars have been tested for susceptibility, preliminary daylily cultivar evaluations by the University of Georgia indicate the following susceptibility ratings: Highly susceptible varieties: Pardon Me, Lemon Yellow, Pandora's Box, Little Gypsy Vagabond, Karie Ann, Colonel Scarborough, Quannah, Ming Toy, Double Buttercup, Russian Rhapsody, Irish Ice, Imperial Guard. Moderately susceptible varieties: Happy Returns, Prelude to Love, Gertrude Condon, Stella D'Oro, Joan Senior, Butterflake, Wilson's Yellow, Star Struck, Crystal Tide. Least susceptible varieties: Mac the Knife, Yangtze, Holy Spirit, Butterscotch Ruffles."
