In America, the Hessians are believed to have brought the Christmas tree tradition with them from Germany when they arrived to help the Brittish quell the revolution. Until that time some of the more religiously rigorous colonies frowned on the celebration of Christmas altogether. But alas, such a charming and heart lifting tradition that breaks the long winter monotony could not long be denied. By the 19th century the renewing value of having a green tree in ones home to symbolize the Christmas holiday had spread rapidly, aided in no small lot by the influx of central European immigrants.
