NEW CHANGES TO CERTIFICATION

There have been some changes made to several courses for the MCSE program:

  • The Windows 95 exam 70-063 is scheduled to retire. It will be replaced by the Windows 95 exam 70-064. If you've already passed the 70-063, then you do not need to take the new exam. The new exam will not affect your certification status in any way - you do not have to take the new exam to keep your certification status current.

  • With Windows 98 scheduled for release in June, expect the exam to be right around the corner. I can't see much new in the Windows 98 exam. It should be very similiar to its Windows 95 counterpart, except for a few Internet Explorer 4.0 planning questions. I've tried the Win98 Beta and, at least on the surface, there didn't seem to be any new features that would affect the average user or small business. The only "major" change I noticed was the integration of Internet Explorer 4.0 with Windows. If you already have Windows 95 and IE 4.0, then the interface is very similiar to Windows 98. The other feature I noticed was the Windows 98 had the ability to receive TV and satellite signals. Although I did not get a chance to play with those features, I don't think they will be of much benefit to the average user. I've also heard Windows 98 is more stable than Windows 95, but couldn't confirm it using my Beta version. In short: If you've already passed the Windows 95 exam, then the Windows 98 exam should be easy for you.

  • It's been rumored that Microsoft will make TCP/IP a core exam instead of an elective. It makes sense since TCP/IP the protocol is taking over the networking world. Just keep in mind: It's only a rumor for the time being.

  • The Internet Explorer exam: Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) is one of the newer exams that is becoming very popular. With the release of Windows 98, the browser is integrated with operating system, and with connection to the Internet becoming prevalent, learning how to use the browser and the OS is becoming mandatory for network administrators. A friend of mine recently took the IE 4.0 exam and told me it wasn't that hard. However, a friend of his told him that the exam was one of the hardest he's ever taken. Who should I believe?

  • Windows NT Workstation 5.0 and Server 5.0 has been delayed until the new year, 1999. Originally, it was supposed to ship during the second quarter of '98. For those of who've been certified in the 3.51: YOU MUST TAKE THE 5.0 TRACK WHEN IT IS RELEASED TO KEEP YOUR CERTIFICATION STATUS CURRENT. For those who've completed their 4.0 training, you do not have to take the 5.0 track to keep your certification status current. You can wait until the 6.0 comes out, whenever that is.
