New Microsoft Exams

Microsoft recently released new versions of some of its software. With the new software releases, the corresponding exams have been announced or have already been released.

One of Microsoft's flagship products is the newly released MS SQL Server 7.0. The 3 SQL Server 7.0 exams include:

Exam 70-028: Administering Microsoft® SQL Server™ 7.0.

This exam has a pass mark of 680 points out of 1000. There are 52 questions and you have 90 minutes to finish the exam. The exam, as of this writing, is multiple choice only. However, expect Microsoft to add a few adaptive questions in the future.

Exam 70-029: Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft® SQL Server™ 7.0.

This exam was slated for release on June 8, 1999. But it might fall a bit behind schedule. Notice the slight difference, in wording, between exams 70-028 and 70-029. The 70-028, the one mentioned above, is considerably easier to pass than this one (exam 70-029). In short, exam 70-028 is easier to study for and easier to pass than the 70-029 because of the different concepts covered between them. You will need to learn or know SQL queries quite well to pass the 70-029 exam.

Exam 70-019:Designing and Implementing Data Warehouses With Microsoft® SQL Server™ 7.0.

This SQL Server exam will be the hardest to pass. It is slated for release sometime in the 3rd quarter. I expect the release to drag into the 4th quarter if the past is any indication. In order to pass this exam, you will need to pass the first 2 exams since this exam will cover advanced concepts-- the same concepts and data models used in banks and large data centers and supply chains of medium-to-large sized companies. Datawarehousing is increasingly becoming the back-end of the Internet. Every piece of information on the Internet is currently stored in database. SQL Server 7.0 also has the ability to store graphics as files which can be manipulated like text and numerical data. To find out more about this new feature, have a look at:

For those who anti-Microsoft and claim that Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 cannot scale well, perhaps the above URL will change their mind. I recently read an article that had a quote from a CIO (Chief Information Officer) of a large company, "Anyone that claims SQL Server 7.0 cannot meet the demands of their company must be from NASA."

Right now, one of the hottest job prospects is in the Information Technology sector, and information is pulled from databases. If you think about it, the Internet is becoming one big database where information is stored, queued, searched and can be used by anyone with an Internet connection...anytime and anywhere.
