Microbiology is the study (logy) of very small (micro) living (bio) things. Oftentimes, people are scared by the topic's name and by science itself.
The objective of this site is to show you that science and specifically microbiology is simply the study of how our world works. Many scientific concepts are easy to understand once all the jargon (language used only in a specific field) is defined.
One example of jargon is the phrase binary fission. Sounds like a nuclear reaction of some sort, right? Not really, all it means is that one bacterium has divided into two daughter cells. Nothing too tough, right? However, the jargon makes it difficult and as a result people believe science is only for the really really intelligent. I am hoping to dispel this notion and explain microbiology in common everyday language.
I had a chemistry teacher tell me that if I learned what the words meant in chemistry, then it would not be so hard. It was sort of like learning a foreign language. I followed his suggestion and lo and behold I found out that chemistry was NOT just for geniuses.
I hope to do the same for all of you concerning Microbiology. I have asked my wife to proofread my future articles to ensure I avoid the JARGON TRAP!!! She is not a scientist and whenever I use a term she doesn't understand she lets me know very quickly. Together I pray we will give you a lot of useful information about science as well as links to some neat microbiology sites. A great site to start learning more about microbiology is Dr. R.E. Hurlbert's Microbiology 101 course.
