E. coli Everywhere!


the bloody diarrhea. This strain of E. coli is called an Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC; Entero= gut, Hemorrhagic= causes bleeding, E. coli).

I know this is strange but, E. coli remind me a little of my children. All of them are human beings but each one is unique. They all have certain unique things they do. One of them is a great joke teller. Another is a good athelete. E. coli strains are all E. coli. However, each strain has some different characteristics.  Some of those unique characteristics, or toxins in this case, cause a different disease to appear in humans. We see with these two different strains, Traveler's diarrhea and E. coli O157:H7, that the ability to make different toxins can change significantly the disease a person will get when infected.
