New Type of Vaccine May Help People Infected With HIVgenes are then read and protein is made from them. Since the resulting proteins are not normally in the cells the immune system will respond to this foreign material to eliminate it. After a period of time the researchers then injected a modified vaccinia virus that contained various SHIV genes in its genome into the monkeys. The vaccinia virus is used to protect people from getting smallpox and does not usually cause illness. An HIV version of this two part (DNA/modified vaccinia virus) vaccine is being manufactured and is slated to begin human trials in the United States by early 2002. This vaccine does not prevent infection but it may allow persons already infected with HIV to live longer healthier lives. Take Care and Think Microbiologically!
