Just a few weeks ago I mentioned how DNA vaccines could help protect us from certain diseases. What should I see but an article from CNN Interactive that describes a DNA vaccine used to protect guinea pigs from the deadly EBOLA VIRUS! One group of guinea pigs was injected with Ebola virus two months after immunization with the DNA vaccine. Fifteen of 16 guinea pigs survived the Ebola virus infection, while all six animals that hadn't been immunized died. If successful, this DNA vaccine may be tested in monkeys and then in humans within two years time. I could go on and on about this topic but the CNN Interactive article is excellent and contains many links at the bottom of the article to give you the information you need. For more information on Ebola viruses you can also go to Bock's lab website or to the article written here at Suite 101. The article written at Suite 101 and the DNA Vaccine Web can give you more information on DNA vaccines. Take Care and Think Microbiologically!
