U.S. Seeks To Eliminate Syphilis

A recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) press release reports that the United States is very close to eliminating syphilis. Less than one percent of U.S. counties (smaller political subdivisions in each state in the U.S.) account for half of reported syphilis cases. Only 2.6 people per 100,000 have syphilis in 1999. This is a 19 percent drop in the syphilis rate when compared to last year. With such a low rate of syphilis the CDC is hopeful that this disease could be eliminated soon.
