A Vaccine That Prevents Rotavirus Diarrhea

is trying to work out a plan to help lower the costs for developing countries.

This vaccine (RotaShield) should be available to people in the United States by the end of September 1998. Wyeth-Ayerstd is applying for permission to use the vaccine in other countries and it appears we have a hopeful first step in lowering the incidence of this deadly diarrhea in our children.

For more information on this virus and the vaccine:

  1. A CNN article "FDA Approves the World's First Vaccine Against Children's Diarrhea" (where I first found out about the FDA approval)
  2. Baron's Medical Microbiology textbook chapter on Rotaviruses
  3. News Release about the vaccine from Wyeth-Ayerstd
