Spring Fever: Detours and Daytrips (Part 1)

The mild Spring temperatures are slowly pulling away the blankets of snow and awakening the slumbering trees and foliage. As the calendar pushes toward the warm days of Summer, you'll undoubtedly find yourself wishing you could hurry the change along. In preparation of Michigan's most popular recreational season, check out these "detours and daytrips!"

Curwood Castle in Owosso

John Oliver Curwood was the famous nature writer whose stories reached a pinnacle of popularity during the 1920s. A number of his classic novels were made into movies, the most popular of which being "The Grizzly," which became the 1989 family classic, "The Bear."

Nestled in the sleepy town of Owosso, Michigan stands a unique Michigan treasure. Constructed in 1922 and overlooking the scenic Shiawassee River looms Curwood Castle. The extravagant structure was designed by the author himself to serve as a personalized writing studio. The gracious city of Owosso now opens the Castle to the public, offering guided tours of the multi-storied historic building and a first-hand look at some of Curwood's original writings.

There are a number of similarly charming activities to do while in Owosso -- more than enough to fill a full day. Of particular interest is the annual Curwood Festival, which includes a city-wide celebration of the author.

Maple Sugar Time

Autumn isn't the only time for orchards in Michigan. Though not as widely known, Springtime marks a time just as exciting as the Fall for many throughout the State. During the short period from mid-February to early April, the Maple trees bring forth their valued nectar: Maple Syrup.

All manner of festivals and activities are planned to celebrate the event, many of which not surprisingly centered around the many sweet foods made from the tasty syrup. You definitely won't want to miss the special pancake celebrations occurring at many festivals, as the freshly-tapped sweet topping is something you won't find on the grocery store shelf!

Don't Forget the State Parks!

Though many of Michigan's state parks are four-season destinations, Summer is by far the most popular and exciting time at the nature preserves. With hundreds of locations all across the large expanse of Michigan landscape, the state parks make a wonderful destination for a weekend drive or adventure.

Activities and events at the parks begin in early Spring, so take some time to see what's going on this weekend as you plan your trip. If it's nothing more than a relaxing, scenic drive that you crave after the long Winter slumber, then simply throw a dart or flip a coin and make one of these treasures your destination.
