It's hard to imagine a time when Holiday and Ramada Inns weren't around to offer the city-to-city familiarity that made such hotels a fixture of American roadside travel culture. Today, smaller, privately owned inns survive mainly as novelties for travelers seeking either nostalgia or local flavor in their destination.
Bed-and-Breakfasts fill this niche quite nicely, offering personal attention and home-like atmosphere in everything from restored historic homes to lighthouses to completely modern new-construction facilities. The official count shows more than two hundred bed-and-breakfasts in the Great Lake state of Michigan. Selecting a handful as the best is a virtually impossible task, but I have collected here an assortment of some of my favorites. Consider a few nights in one of these charming locales on your next road trip through Michigan. The recent holiday feature, "Michigan Holiday Escapes" introduced you to Union City's Victorian Villa Bed and Breakfast. With unequalled attention to period detail, a wide range of appropriately interesting amenities and packages and a rich assortment of local area activities, the Victorian Villa is truly one of Michigan's most alluring inns. The pleasing period structure resides on an acre of professionally landscaped Victorian gardens and grounds near an equally quaint 19th century river village. Innkeeper's Ron Gibson and Cynthia Shattuck boast on the Villa's website: "From the elegant & romantic overnight lodging accommodations to the sumptuous 7-course Champagne and Wine Dinners, occasionally hosted by the likes of General George Armstrong Custer, Mr. Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Mr. Sherlock Holmes, the Villa is an Inn of all Seasons and for all Reasons." Just south of Traverse City in the Lake Michigan community of Beulah you'll find another quaint bed-and-breakfast style inn. The Hotel Frankfort is heir to nearly 150 years of history, preserving both the locale and reputation of its namesake hotel originally constructed in 1867. The Victorian style structure with its gingerbread facades serves as an inviting, romantic escape for couples. The attentive, expert staff can arrange for champagne and flowers upon arrival, and will remain at your disposal throughout your stay. You'll want to experience the fine cuisine in the elegant low-keyed dining room, and the candle-lit wine cellar offers an impressive collection of imported wines. Southwest Michigan is rich in culture, history and hospitality, so it is no surprise that the area ranks high in its offering of bed-and-breakfast gems. Carriage House at the Harbor in South Haven Michigan holds the distinct honor of being Michigan's first and only AAA Four-Diamond Award winner. Carriage House Proprietors invite you to experience one (or more!) of their unusually luxurious guest rooms where stunning views, soothing whirlpools and cozy fireplaces are commonplace.
