Winter Resort Getaways

Michigan spends a large part of its solar rotation on the frigid side of the sun. This lengthy cold-season's record snowfalls make possible the beautiful landscapes and extensive winter recreation opportunities, but can also serve up an acute case of cabin fever. When the lengthy winter months leave you feeling a little stifled, plan an escape to one of these Winter-centric resort destinations.

At the risk of seeming impartial in my mention of Mackinac, no expose on Michigan resorts would be complete with mention of Mackinac Island's Mission Point Resort. In the category of Winter Hideaways, there is simply no comparison. Take a delicate island setting, free from the intrusions of automobiles and traffic, add the extravagant ambiance and world-class service of Mission Point Resort, and you have the assurance of an unforgettable vacation. Daily excursions from your pampered suite existence will provide opportunities to experience the renowned trails of one of the world's top ten cross-country ski destinations. Lace up your skates for a refreshing stroll across any number of frozen ponds, then climb aboard a majestic horse-drawn sleigh for a twilight ride around the historic island.

To the delight of the winter traveler, Mission Point is not the sole vestige of such seasonal delights. Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman, Michigan offers similar getaway options, albeit without the novelty of island solitude. Their popular winter package features a 35-45 minute horse-drawn sleigh ride through the Northern Woods to view elk, deer and wildlife. In their own words, "The quiet is profound... you notice the clink-clink of the harness, the occasional snort from the broad-chest draft horses and the heavy drum beat of their hooves against the frozen ground." Complete the evening with a superb five-course gourmet dinner prepared on antique wood-cook stoves in the cozy "Elkhorn Log Cabin." Snow shoeing, skiing, skating, and snow-mobiling round out the recreational options at Thunder Bay.

Winter at the Double JJ in Rothbury, Michigan is always a treat. The standard snow-sports are recreation staples at the Double JJ, but so are exciting equestrian programs and the more rare experience of dog-sledding. No worries, the calm winter landscape and service-oriented instructors will make sure even the most fearful guest leaves the ranch familiar with the saddle and comfortable with the 'mush' of the dogsled. The Double JJ promises: "There are miles of beautiful trails to enjoy. Wranglers will help you remember long-forgotten skills or help you master new ones. The lakes are covered by ice, the fairways are beautifully white, and the overlooks are incredible."
