The nineteenth century streets, homes and businesses of Henry Ford's Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan are transformed each year into a dazzling display of period decore. The annual "Twelve Days of Christmas" event invites visitors to a twilight stroll through 200 years of American Christmas traditions guided by the soft glow of hundreds of lanterns. Voices of carolers grace the air as horse-drawn sleighs and carriages move enchantingly through the village.

Even historic Holly, Michigan gets in on the act with their very popular Dickens Olde Fashioned Christmas Festival. Holly presents a unique look into Christmas past. Here, the old-world villages -- and characters -- are straight out of Charles Dickens' Victorian Tales.

A less visited holiday destination lies in the often-overlooked corner of Southwest Michigan known affectionately as Harbor Country. The quaint waterside boroughs comprising the region boast hospitality, charm and enchantment all year round, so it is no surprise that their annual "Holiday Happenings" dazzles visitors. Area businesses and citizens work together to transform the region into a nostalgic picture of Christmases past. You're invited to peruse rustic cabins, authentically furnished Victorian villas, 1940s country kitchens and 1950s Heywood-Wakefield living rooms. Top off your visit by taking in the sight of one of the most unique holiday lighting displays in the world!

While these locales may win the prize for history and tradition, holiday festivities and displays are not unique to any one Michigan city. Communities all across the state delight in the opportunity to decorate their own mainstreets, cul-de-sacs and parks. Most notable is the annual Battle Creek "International Festival of Lights." Near historic Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dominos Farms ornaments its rolling landscape in thousands of lights to provide one of the most dazzling holiday spectacles in Southeast Michigan. A complete list of the state's most prominent displays is available on the Travel Michigan website.

In the rush and worry that hallmarks the modern holiday season, little time remains to reflect and consider the joys, peace and blessings of this very sacred time of year. Michigan’s many holiday havens help to inspire those quiet moments of introspection and wonder to help restore the magic of the season.
