What is Metaphysical Christianity

© Yvette Deluca

At first thought, the term Metaphysical Christianity seems to contradict itself. How can one be Christian and Metaphysical at the same time? When someone you know says they are a Christian, what are they saying? The American Heritage dictionary defines Christian as : "professing to believe in Christianity". Christianity is defined as: "religion founded on the teachings of Jesus."

There are alot of people who have a distorted view of metaphysics. It is not witchcraft, astrology, numerology, tarot, or fortune telling. Although, many metaphysical people, myself included, study these ancient art forms. Metaphysics is a study of truth. It is looking beyond the superficial, seeing what is really there and not just accepting things at face value. American Heritage defines metaphysics as: "the branch of philosophy that examines the nature of reality and the relationship between mind and matter." What does that mean, in the real world? It means asking Why, and How our world works the way it does. It means understanding everyday things on a deeper level.

Metaphysical Christianity is a belief system, founded on the teachings of Jesus, which looks at how He perceived reality. It also examines the relationship between mind and matter, which is God. A Metaphysical Christian studies not only what Jesus taught in words, but also how He taught in actions. We study the imagery and metaphor used in the Bible and strive to understand the deepest meaning.

In this spirit of finding the hidden meaning of Bible teachings, lets look at John 4:24. There it is written "God is spirit; and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth." According to American Heritage, spirit is "the animating force within human beings; soul." Animate is defined as: "to give life to." God then, is the force which gives life. If God is the life giving force, then there must be God in everything which is alive. Any person, animal or plant you can think of, if it is alive, must contain God. Worship means to "love and honor as a deity" It was said that we must worship in spirit and truth. This means that we must love and honor God (i.e.: the animating force within all living things) So then, to "worship in spirit and truth" is to acknowledge God in each and every living thing and to love and honor every living thing as God.

This theory of "God in us" is supported in various places throughout the New Testament of the Bible. I will
