Man of Sorrows! What a Name

Good Friday

Man of sorrows, what a name,
for the Son of God, who came,
ruined sinners to reclaim
Alleluia! What a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
in my place condemned He stood,
sealed my pardon with His blood
Alleluia! What a Savior!

Guilty, helpless, lost were we,
spotless Lamb of God was He,
full atonement can it be
Alleluia! What a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die,
'It is finished!' Was His cry,
now in heaven exulted high
Alleluia! What a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King,
all His ransomed home to bring,
then anew this song we'll sing
Alleluia! What a Savior!
(Philip Bliss 1838-1876)

"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we appreciated him not.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:3-6).

The Cross does not end the Gospel story. We do not worship a dead Messiah. We worship a living One. He not only died, He rose again from the grave victoriously. He ascended back into heaven, and at this moment He is sitting at God's right hand, and the prophet says:

"He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities" (Isaiah 53:11).

Messiah Jesus of Nazareth took our hell that we might have His heaven. Anyone can bring added joy to His heart by accepting the gift of eternal life that He longs to give to any who will accept it. He invites whomever will to the foot of the cross where He gives forgiveness for sins.

Upon the cross of Jesus
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me
And from my stricken heart with tears
Two wonders I confess
The wonders of redeeming love
And my unworthiness.
(Elizabeth Clephane)

May every blessing of this holy season be upon you and yours!
