Bible Code or No Bible Code

So, you have read Bible Code II by Michael Drosnin and now feel that you totally understand the Bible. What are Bible codes anyway, and are they a legitimate way to read, decipher and understand the Bible?

Bible codes are "cryptograms . . . that have a time lock . . . that could not be opened until the computer was invented". They seem to have had some sort of mystical genesis, though the Bible code is purported to have been discovered in the original Hebrew version of the Old Testament. Moses received the Bible from God, and "according to legend, he received it contiguous, without break of words." In other words, in its original form, Scripture had no punctuation, only "one continuous letter strand, 304,805 letters long."

The codes appear in something similar to crossword puzzle style and are also read in that manner. Any one page may have several horizontal and vertical lines which contain words of various prognostications, with their appropriate explanations.

This is a book review - of sorts, so if you have not read it run to the store, and pick up a copy if you have nothing better on which to spend a few bucks. This is the long-awaited sequel to the #1 international bestseller, but look at some of the other fine(?) books on that list. It is fast reading. If you do not read straight through, you will fast put it down.

I did not read Bible Code #1, but I picked up the second code book in Barnes and Noble because of its catchy 40% discount sticker, and because we were under a winter storm warning. I needed reading material. Pretty dust jacket in black, gold, and white. Not too thick. Catchy first line in the Introduction. I paid for a Cappuccino and found a comfortable chair. Ended up buying the book because it said the code predicted Rabin would be killed. It also said much more, like predictions of a fast approaching Armageddon, and that a nuclear war will start as the result of an act of terrorism in the Middle East. It seemed like exciting reading for a Southern ice storm.

Michael Drosnin is a reporter, formally with The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. According to him, the Bible contains an ancient hidden code which, until the advent of the computer, was hidden from view. For 3000 years encrypted messages were buried throughout the Scriptures until a special code was opened by a famous Israeli mathematician, Dr. Eliyahu Rips, who is a leading expert in group theory, that field of math that underlies quantum physics. Don't let that frighten you. It is not a book on physics. I like physics. Physics is always dependable.
