Early Onset Bipolar Disorder

A few months ago, Oprah had a show about out-of-control kids. Unlike Maury, Sally Jessy, and Jenny, Oprah did not send teens with purple hair to abusive boot camps and have them come back to the show in khakis from the Gap looking like a Kennedy kid.

Oprah had a pre-teen girl with ADHD who had a lot of trouble controlling her impulses and was labeled spoiled and emotionally immature by teachers, family, and friends. She cried on TV and said, "I want to change. I want to have friends. I don't want to be like this." She was given no promises, for there are none to give. But she was given the hope of therapy and an evaluation for the right medications to help her control her impulses and relate to people more appropriately.

If only more adults took responsibility to this extent we would need far fewer prisons.

Cindy was online to find help for her five year old with bipolar disorder.

"My little girl is only 5 yrs of age. Our Dr. is really great and has seen us through some very bad times. Courtney is a high energy child. She cries, screams, hits, calls names, and harms herself to get her way 2 to 4 times each day. We had tried everything, I thought. After being placed in a hospital, dr's found many problems, that have now been renamed as one... bipolar.

Please...I am very scared. I know almost nothing about this and she is the light of my life. She stays so upset and mad... I know she cannot be happy. Do I give her what she wants to stop her from getting mad? Or do I hold my ground?

When she stops screaming after four or five hours she crashes... hard. It hurts me so much to see her like this, however it is nothing new. They started her on Depakote, Aderall, and Remeron. We go for blood work on Monday of next week. She hates it. She has gone through so much to be so young. I'm afraid of how this will all come out.

This child is so pretty. She is everything I have ever wanted in a daughter. Please help us, if you can. I guess what I am doing is looking for someone to tell me this is going to get better and she will be ok. I am so lost and scared."

Isabel responds.

"My son is 6 my daughter is 10. I have bipolar as does my father. My sister doesn't have it. We're watching my children and two nephews.
