Uprooted!

Of course, those who move to a new place, and start working straight away probably settle in quicker because their new routine is force upon them so much quicker. Also, those with children at school probably fit in better as they have contact with other mothers who they see at the sporting activities, or while waiting to pick their children up from school.

The job of the therapist, is, yet again, not to try and help the person to see all the good points of the place they have recently moved to, but to help them to fit in, to adapt, and to feel a part of their new community. It doesn't matter how wonderful a place is, if you don't feel as if you belong, you will never feel comfortable there – so, once again, work with the person and their feelings about the place. Don't give lectures on how the person should change in order to fit in. No place is worth it if you have to change your whole personality, so do not expect that of the person. Instead try to help them to find ways in which they can live out their own personalities without sticking out like a sore thumb.
