TIME WAITS FOR NO MANRecently, I have learned a couple of really valuable lessons about time. You will probably be aghast if I tell you that I truly believe that time – wait for it - is a state of mind! Sounds crazy, doesn't it? I mean, there are "only so many hours in a day", and so, if you run out of hours, then you run out of time. Logical. The trouble is, in my experience, logic is not always a good gauge of things like this. Last year I began a local newspaper, while working part-time in someone else's office. I will admit that things were very stressful then. I had a lot on my plate, which has certainly become easier as I settled into a routine, and customers got to know and trust me. However, One thing a friend told me at the time has stuck with me. She came from a little village in Switzerland, and there was an old lady who lived in the valley. Apparently whenever someone managed to visit her, she would always be running around saying "I have so much to do, no time... no time". My friend tells me that she never managed to finish any of her projects. In my case, my family didn't like me working on my newspaper as I was ALWAYS working. And so I knew that in order to remain a good mother and husband and to gain the support of my family for my venture, I would have to change my strategy drastically. When the new year began, I made it clear that I would only work on the paper while the children were at school. Then, if I had anything else that needed doing, but could not complete, then I would wake up early in the mornings, while the rest of the family was asleep. And then I noticed something strange. I started being able to complete my work in the time I had allowed for it, and rarely woke up early. Friends commented on how stress free I looked, and no-one noticed any compromise to the quality of the newspaper – in fact it continues to grow. I have learned a valuable lesson, and hope that you can learn from my experience too. All the experts are right – sometimes we have to find this out for ourselves! Time fills the space you allow for it. What I had been doing was to leave all the computer work "for tonight" because I needed the day time for telephone and customer calls. Now, however, I manage to do it all in the day – just by making sure I keep customer visits shorter, and keeping certain days only for computer work and other days only for people work.
