A person is less likely to want to change their way of behaving if they feel in any way threatened. However, if they feel confirmed and understood, they will be more likely to try and see the whole picture, whatever that may be.
I think that as therapists, it is not our duty to know just what the person's final decision regarding their problem should be - the final outcome should be unique - and should fit with the client and his/her situation. And the only way in which this can occur is if the patient is allowed to explore all possibilities for her/himself, in a completely non-judgmental and non-threatening environment.
So forget about the therapists you see on TV, and think again about why you are in the helping game. Yes... you are there to help people to help themselves, and this won't happen if you try to force your ideas and opinions onto them!
