SOME USEFUL HOMEWORK EXERCISES WITH COUPLE PROBLEMS

Couples need to practice telling their partners how they feel when the partner does a particular thing. For example, teach your clients that instead of saying "you have no manners" when the wife's husband leaves the dinner table before she has finished eating, coach her to say something like "I feel really alone when I have to finish my meal on my own". Also, instead of the man saying "you act like a real tart when you flirt with all my business colleagues", teach him to say something like, "I am proud to have you on my arm, but when you give all the other men so much attention, I can't help but feel envious."

It would be a good idea for the counselor to start the communication process in the therapy session - about issues which bother each party, and help them to discuss them in the above manner. It always helps if the counselor is around to prevent the couple from slipping into their old pattern of blaming.

I hope this can be useful to you. Please let me know if it is, and if you have comments which might help our readers, or queries I might be able to help with.
