However, there will be significant changes to the system in the following year. Tennis officials have plans to introduce a new rankings system. This will involve every player starting the year with no points, and gaining ranking points throughout the year based on all of their results. All results at the grand slams will count. It is hoped that this new system will serve as a remedy to the problems inherent in the current one.

Hopefully this will indeed be the case.

Tennis News

In Hamburg former world number 1 Marcelo Rios returned to form, beating Mariano Zabaleta by 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. This is his first title for the year.

In Atlanta, unseeded Austrian Stefan Koubek beat rising Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean. Koubek upset Jim Courier in the semi finals, and went on to route Grosjean in the final by 6-1, 6-2.

The Munich final was contested by 2 unseeded players, Franco Squillari and Andrei Pavel. Squillari won the match by 6-4, 6-3.

In the Czech Open, Dominik Hrbaty won an all Czech final, defeating Slava Dosedel by 6-2, 6-2.

Finally, Lleyton Hewitt won his 2nd career title, beating Belgian Xavier Malisse in Florida. He won by 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1.
