Rafter hits hot streak

Patrick Rafter has hit top form over the past two weeks. His performance in winning two consecutive Super Nine tournaments has made Agassi's earlier hot streak pale in comparison. First Rafter won the Canadian Open in Toronto without dropping a set, becoming the first Australian to win the title since John Newcombe in 1973. Then perhaps even more impressively he backed up to win his second tournament on the trot in Cincinnati Ohio. At the close of Cincinnati Rafter had extended his winning streak to 10 consecutive matches, a career high. Along the way he beat top quality opponents including Jonas Bjorkman, Tim Henman, Richard Kraijecek, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Pete Sampras.

Rafter has confounded his critics with these performances. His victory over Sampras has shown that at his peak he truly does deserve his high ranking, and definitely has a chance of defending his US Open title. The biggest worry for him now must be whether he has pushed himself too hard before the US Open begins at the end of this month. An early round loss in the New Haven tournament could be the break that he needs. After losing to Guillaume Raoux in the 3rd round, he stated:

"I need time to recharge my batteries and get ready for New York." He added: "Losing is not good for the confidence, but I know that by the time the US Open comes along, I'll be ready."

Rafter's year up until recently has been unspectacular compared to 1997. He had won two smaller tournament titles, but these were interspersed with early round losses and disappointment in the grand slams. After losing in the 4th round of Wimbledon to Tim Henman Rafter said frankly: "...I'm trying to work out myself - why do I have fear and doubt when I play a 4th round match at Wimbledon?"

He has done much to make amends for that the past fortnight. The confidence of last year seems to have returned. He is now regarded by many as a hot favourite for a repeat performance at the US Open this year. But it would be wise to keep things in perspective. As Sampras said, the difference between himself and Rafter is clear: "10 grand slams."

It must be kept in mind that although Rafter has struck excellent form, there is no substitute for experience.
