Laboratory evidence points to a strong role played by vitamin D in helping to prevent breast, prostrate, and colon cancer, too. Fifteen minutes of sunlight on bare skin in the summer will harvest plenty of vitamin D for then and for the winter months, too. A study published in the January 2, 2002 Journal of the American Medical Association found that older women who consume high levels of vitamin A from supplements, or supplements and food combined, are 48 percent more likely to fracture a hip than those who consumed less.
