Images of Dominic at San Marco, Florence.

the Crucifixion but a crucifix. Hood, "Saint Dominic's Manner of Praying," Art Bulletin, June 1986, vol.LXVIII no. 2, p. 194-206. The same can be argued for sacra converzatione scenes such as this altarpiece.

3 - These frescos are arranged according to cell order and paralleled with their respective illustrations in De modo orandi. They are further identified by their mode (meditation, divine intercession, etc.).

6 - Such images sustained senior friars according to the three principles above. Older and more experienced friars were entitled to more involved themes (such as the last supper or Transfiguration) which carried more complex theological iconography. This recognized that the friar may not retain what he studied without daily reinforcement.

8 -Hood, p.198. "This manner of praying stirs up devotion, the soul stirring the body, and the body in turn stirring the soul. Praying in this way used to make Saint Dominic dissolve utterly into weeping." Tugwell, Nine Ways of Prayer, p.11. It is notable that it is "praying in this way" that causes Dominic to weep, not meditation on the crucifixion or sufferings of Christ.

9 - Baxandall p.63-66.
