Well, as we head on the new year of 1998, here are some
healthy resolutions to keep in mind to keep ourselves
physically and mentally fit for this season. These are some
pearls that I offer my patients (including myself) to maintain
health. Put away the
fatty holiday meals and let's do this right this year!
Eat right. Fruits and vegetables in abundance, meats and high starch foods in moderation. Drink eight glasses of water daily. Try not to eat past seven o'clock at night. If you "fall off the wagon" on one meal, make sure you stay on it the next time. Keep a meal diary to see how you are doing. Walk. Or jog. Or bike. Whatever you like to do, as long as you keep it up for a good 25 minutes. And try to do it at least five days a week. Make an appointment with yourself just like brushing your teeth. I like to keep a calendar to cross off days I've exercised a good month should have lots of crosses! Stop smoking. And make you sure you don't start. I don't have to tell you why you should; cancer, emphysema we all know the diseases. Drugs and patches can help, but more so are support from friends and family. Avoid situations with other smokers. When you quit, try to fill in the time that you used to smoke by doing an activity you like, be it chewing gum or taking a walk. Minimize stress. Easier to say than do, but try to spend at least five minutes of a day away from distractions, such as being in a quiet, darkened room for either reflection or meditation. Or a warm shower or bubble bath. Massage therapy. Whatever works best, but you owe it to yourself to devote some time to relax. Any other suggestions? Have a great '98! Go To Page: 1
