I've been long interested in sports and devoted my life to medicine. So what could be a more natural convergence of the two for me than sports medicine? This new and innovative field encompasses everything from athletic trainers to physical medicine and rehabilitation. Now docs are getting certified by obtaining fellowships in sports medicine. Long a field solely dominated by orthopedic surgeons, it now sees family practicioners and other primary care physicians getting involved. As more and more "weekend warriors" suffer athletic injuries, it becomes increasingly important to have physicians well trained in dealing with these ailments. Here are some great web sites to those who are interested:
Want to play doctor? Medfacts' SportsDoc includes a virtual patient question-and-answer session of common orthopedic injuries. Also contains a glossary and doctor referral center. A personal fave of mine is The Orthopaedic Resident Cyberlink Launchpad which contains smart and sensible web sites for any up-and-coming sports doctor. Plus I just like resident made web sites. Diving Medicine is a great site for diving related illnesses and prevention. Ideal for you Jacque Cousteau types out there.
